Let’s Talk Skin: Why a Routine Isn’t Just About Products, It’s About Consistency
If there’s one thing we hear all the time, it’s this:
"I want to take care of my skin, but I don’t know where to start…” or
"Do over-the-counter products even work?"
If you've ever asked yourself either of those questions, you're not alone.
For most of my adult life, I viewed skincare as an all-or-nothing endeavor. I thought you either needed a bathroom drawer overflowing with expensive products or a dermatologist's prescription pad to see meaningful results. However, over the last year, my perspective has changed.
Instead of chasing the newest trend or the most expensive cream, I've become more focused on something much simpler: consistency. The truth is, skincare isn't about finding one magical product. It's about creating sustainable habits that support your skin over time, and recently, I've added something new to that routine: collagen.
For years, I was skeptical. Especially as someone who pays close attention to protein quality, I knew collagen wasn't considered a complete protein, so I wasn't convinced it deserved all the hype it was getting. As more research has emerged, though, I've become curious enough to give it a fair chance.
These days, I'm adding a scoop of collagen to my morning coffee or protein shake. It’s an addition of protein with potential.
Because whether we're talking about skincare, nutrition, or wellness in general, the real magic rarely comes from perfection. It comes from showing up consistently.
So, What Does the Science Actually Say?
Can a simple skincare routine really make a difference? And what about supplements like collagen?
Over-the-Counter Products Can Absolutely Work
One of the biggest misconceptions about skincare is that effective products must be expensive or prescription-only. Still, the reality is that many dermatologist-recommended ingredients are available right at your local drugstore and are supported by years of clinical research.
Retinol (Vitamin A) is one of the most studied skincare ingredients available. It helps increase cell turnover, supports collagen production, and can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles over time.
Vitamin C is another powerhouse ingredient. It helps brighten skin tone, protect against environmental stressors, improve overall texture, and support collagen production.
Niacinamide has gained popularity for good reason. Research suggests it can help reduce redness, strengthen the skin barrier, improve hydration, and support a more even complexion.
You'll also find beneficial ingredients like peptides and ceramides in many over-the-counter moisturizers. These ingredients help strengthen the skin barrier, improve elasticity, and support healthy hydration.
And of course, there is one product that dermatologists consistently place above all others: Sunscreen.
Daily SPF remains the single most effective tool for protecting collagen, preventing premature aging, and reducing long-term sun damage.
The catch? None of these ingredients work overnight.
Most people begin noticing meaningful improvements after six to twelve weeks of consistent use. That's why patience matters just as much as the products themselves.
What About Collagen?
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body and plays a major role in skin structure, elasticity, hydration, and firmness. Unfortunately, our natural collagen production starts to decline as we age. For many of us, that process becomes more noticeable in our 30s and beyond.
Research is becoming increasingly promising that taking collagen may actually help.
A 2019 meta-analysis published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology found that women who took oral collagen supplements experienced improvements in skin hydration, elasticity, and dermal collagen density after eight to twelve weeks of daily use.
Similarly, a 2021 review published in Nutrients concluded that collagen peptides may help improve visible signs of skin aging, particularly when combined with supportive nutrients such as Vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, and zinc.
It's important to keep one thing in mind: collagen is not a complete protein because it's low in the amino acid tryptophan. That means it shouldn't replace high-quality protein sources in your diet.
However, as a targeted supplement for skin, joint, and connective tissue health, current research suggests it may offer meaningful benefits when used consistently.
Where Should You Start?
If you're feeling overwhelmed by skincare, start small.
A simple, effective routine is often better than an elaborate one you can't maintain.
1. Build a Simple Three-Step Foundation
Focus on these essentials first:
Cleanse morning and night
Moisturize with ingredients like ceramides, niacinamide, or peptides
Apply SPF every morning—even on cloudy days
That's it, and you don't need ten products to create healthy habits.
2. Add Targeted Treatments When You're Ready
Once your basics are consistent, consider adding:
Retinol or bakuchiol at night to support cell turnover
Vitamin C serum in the morning for brightness and antioxidant protection
Richer moisturizers or overnight masks for additional hydration
Think of these as enhancements, not necessities.
3. Consider Trying Collagen
If collagen interests you, most studies use approximately 5–10 grams of hydrolyzed collagen peptides daily.
Many people find it easy to mix into coffee, smoothies, or protein shakes.
And remember: give it time. Most research evaluates results after at least eight to twelve weeks of consistent use.
4. Stay Consistent and Be Patient
Healthy skin develops gradually.
You may notice improvements in hydration and texture before you see visible changes in the mirror. That's normal.
The goal isn't instant transformation. It's creating habits that support your skin day after day.
Because when it comes to skincare, consistency almost always matters more than the brand name on the bottle.
